The Hospital in the Rock tour takes you inside one of Budapest’s most fascinating underground attractions. Located beneath Buda Castle Hill, this historic site is a former emergency hospital, military facility and Cold War nuclear bunker. A Hospital in the Rock tour is a unique opportunity to discover a hidden chapter of Budapest’s history.
What to expect on the Hospital in the Rock tour
On the tour you will enter a remarkable cave complex that played an important role during some of the most challenging periods of Hungary’s modern history. Originally established as an emergency hospital during World War II, the facility was later expanded and reinforced during the Cold War. It was designed to protect against potential nuclear and chemical attacks.
As you explore the underground corridors and rooms, you will discover original medical equipment and hospital facilities. You will also see historical objects and authentic furnishings. In addition, wax figures recreate scenes from the past, helping illustrate the experiences of doctors, nurses, soldiers and civilians who used the facility during times of conflict.
Your professional guide will explain the history of the site and its role during World War II, the 1956 Hungarian Revolution and the Cold War. You will learn how the complex became a highly protected nuclear shelter and why its underground location was strategically important. The site is now run as the Hospital in the Rock Nuclear Bunker Museum, which opened to the public after decades as a classified facility.
An optional audio guide is also available, providing additional historical information throughout the experience. It is a useful option for visitors who want to learn more about the site at their own pace.
Located approximately 15 metres underground, the museum reveals a hidden side of Budapest. The exhibition preserves original objects, equipment and spaces, allowing visitors to experience a vivid connection with the past.
Please note that mobile phone reception is unavailable inside most of the exhibition area. For safety reasons, visitors must remain with the guide. Independent entry and unguided visits are not permitted.
Finally, book your Hospital in the Rock tour and step beneath Budapest to discover a fascinating chapter of the city’s history.

Age Limit: Children under 6 years old are strictly not permitted to enter. The museum content is recommended for visitors aged 12 and above.
The hospital part can be visited with wheelchair or other mobility aid equipment. The machinery-part is not safe and not available with wheelchair due to the many steps, narrow doors and zigzagged corridors. The facility was built to be a bunker and underground hospital in the 1940s, and not to be a museum. As a result, the institution is not totally accessible, therefore people with disabilities can only access the three-quarter of the exhibition.
The subterranean tunnels remain at a constant cool temperature of 15–18°C (59–64°F) year-round; a light jacket or sweater is recommended.
